Elmer Core Obituary
COLUMBUS GROVE Elmer Eugene “Gene” Core, 89, died Nov. 22, 2012, at the Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. He was born June 1, 1923, near Pandora, to Ray and Eva (Smith) Core Sr. On June 21, 1947, he married Beulah Sayers, who preceded him in death in January 1999. After flying on a B-17 with the 351st Bomb Group during World War II, Mr. Core worked for 30 years at the Lima Army Modification Center, Lima’s tank plant. He was an active member of St. John United Methodist Church, Columbus Grove, where he served as a trustee for many years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9648 and American Legion Post 516, both of Columbus Grove. He enjoyed gardening and caring for his many roses. Survivors include a daughter, Sherri Core, of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Mary (Francis) Geiger, of Pandora; two grandsons, Lance and Eric Mayerhofer; and a great-grandson, Ryan Mayerhofer. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Core and Ray Core Jr. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. Pastor Gary Ginter will officiate. Burial will be in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove, with military rites by the C.G. American Legion-VFW color guard. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gene Core Scholarship Fund, c/o Columbus Grove High School, 201 W. Cross St., Columbus Grove, OH 45830, or the Putnam County Council on Aging, 1425 E.
