Cairo, Ohio Richard "Dick" L. Shafer, 79, died at 7:00 pm, Monday, March 19, 2018, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, Ohio. He was born October 29, 1938, Lima, Ohio to Jacob Richard "Moe" and Marian Francis "Toot" (Gephart) Shafer. They both preceded him in death. On July 2, 1960, he married Nancy A. Barto, and she died May 19, 2016. Dick is survived by one son Richard L. "Rick" Shafer, Jr. of Cairo; two daughters, Dawn (Lee Koppin) Shafer of Anna and Lori (Dave) Brown of Columbus Grove; five grandchildren, Matt (Lori) Parker, Lee (Jennifer) Parker, Alex Walker, Amy (Brian) Schroeder and Emma Brown; eight great grandchildren, Austin & Alexis Parker, Caden & Chase Parker, Jacksen, Gavin, Ava and Mia Schroeder; four brothers, Tom (Susan) Shafer of Foster City, CA, Kraig Shafer, Steve (Sue) Shafer of Cairo and Cary Shafer of Elida; and one sister, Nancy (George Davidson) Shafer of Henderson, NV. He was preceded in death by one great grandson Nolan Parker. Dick was a graduate of Columbus Grove High School, class of 1956. He was former owner of Shafer's Meat Market, Lima, had worked at the former Sylvania, Ottawa, retired after 32 years on December 2017 as a Monroe Township Trustee, and was a life-long farmer. He was the cornerstone of "The Round Table" at Biggie's, Cairo. Dick enjoyed playing solitaire and especially spending time with his family. Services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Columbus Grove. Pastor Michael Whitman will officiate with burial to follow at Altstaetter Cemetery, Columbus Grove. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2018 and 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove.
