COLUMBUS GROVE Norman B. Kohls, 86, died at 6:05 a.m. Feb. 19, 2013, at The Meadows of Kalida in Kalida. He was born Sept. 26, 1926, in New Cleveland to Ferd and Dorothy Schroeder Kohls, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 26, 1956, he married Jean A. Hoffman, who survives. Mr. Kohls was a 1944 graduate of Columbus Grove High School. He started working in the family grocery business at the age of 14. He was an Army veteran and returned to the family grocery business. He retired in 2007 as owner/operator of Kohls Markets in Columbus Grove and Ottawa. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove. He was a member of American Legion Post 63 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie 2234, both in Ottawa. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors also include three sons, Dennis (LaDonna) Kohls, of Leipsic, and Mark (Laurie) Kohls and Jeff (Traci) Kohls, both of Columbus Grove; two daughters, Jill (Tim) Oard and Jan (Dennis) Barkimer, both of Columbus Grove; his mother-in-law, Virginia Hoffman, of Columbus Grove; a sister-in-law, Marilyn “Mick” Kohls, of Columbus Grove; 14 grandchildren, Jesse (Erin) Kohls, Amanda Kohls, Brittany Kohls, Tyler Kohls, Ali Kohls, Morgan Kohls, Erin (Drew) Bordner, Jenna Oard, Heather Oard, Greg Barkimer, Jennifer Barkimer, Kristin (Kyle Meyer) Barkimer, Landon Kohls and Connor Kohls; three stepgrandchildren, Ryan (Nicole) Hanf, Andrew (Kelley) Hanf and Josh Hanf; four great-grandchildren, Addisen, Grace and Jacksen Kohls and Jayce Bordner; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeriah, Caeden and Brody Hanf. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Al and Virgil Kohls; and three sisters, Odelia Borchers, Mildred Blotkamp and Leona Kuhlman. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove. Father Tom Extejt will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, where a Scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony School Endowment Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.
