Marie Korte Schmersal Obituary
Marie P. Korte Schmersal, 94, died at 7:25 a.m., on Tuesday July 15, 2014 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio. She was born on May 18, 1920 in Cuba, Ohio to Edward and Petronella (Merschman) Bockrath, who preceded her in death. Marie married Raymond J. Korte on May 21, 1941 and he died on July 20, 1986. She then married Gerald William Schmersal on August 21, 1992 and he died on January 3, 2014. A homemaker, Mrs. Schmersal was a 73 year member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society of the church. She was a 4-H leader, had worked at McAdams Florist, Columbus Grove. She was a Sales Agent for the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, Council #166, and had served nine years as the Director of the State Board of the C.L.C., and seven years on the Toledo Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary #516, a member of the Senior Citizens, and a 50 year member of the neighborhood Pinochle Club, all of Columbus Grove. She also was past president of the Putnam County Council on Aging. Marie loved music, playing the piano and the accordion since childhood. As a teenager, she played for Masses at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Cuba, and substituted at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus Grove. Survivors include two sons, Ronald (Carol) Korte of Columbus Grove and Robert (Theresa) Korte of Ottawa; five daughters, Alice (Dan) Hall of Fitzgerald, GA, Jane Williams of Thomasville, NC, Phyllis (Timothy) Hunt and Arlene (Alan) Stover both of Columbus Grove and Virginia Thompson of Findlay; five step daughters, Patricia Dallal of Worthington, Sylvilla (John) Nick of Bradenton, FL, Mary (Robert) Sherman of Largo, FL, Cynthia (Jay) Harden of Cygnet, and Lisa (Leroy) Schroeder of Ottawa; six step sons, Eugene (Nancy) Schmersal of Kalida, Charles (Robin) Schmersal of Pandora, Robert (Mary Jo) Schmersal of Ottawa, Paul (Carolyn) Schmersal of Ottawa, Thomas (Dianne) Schmersal of Cloverdale and Kevin (Bev) Schmersal of Ottawa; one step son in law, Steve Stechschulte of Kalida; two sisters in law, Mary Margaret Bockrath of Glandorf and Leona Korte of Leipsic; one brother in law, Michael "Elmer" Korte of Kalida; 14 grandchildren; 17 grt-grandchildren, and two grt-grt-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three grandchildren: Robin Bandine, Timothy Hunt and Tina Hunt; one brother: Thomas Bockrath; two sons in-law: Jasper Williams and Joe Dugger; one step daughter: Geraldine A. Stechschulte; one step son in-law: Eli Dallal; four sisters in-law and seven brothers in-law. Services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove with Rev. Tom Extejt officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Columbus Grove. Friends may call 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, where the CLC Rosary will be held at 8:00p.m..
