Columbus Grove, Ohio John A. Samsal, 90, died at 4:38 a.m., on Thursday, January 28, 2016, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio. He was born on July 1, 1925, near Columbus Grove, Ohio, to Freeman and Edna F. (Kohli) Samsal. They both preceded him in death. On June 2, 1949, he married May F. Gagnon, and she died on December 2, 1995. John is survived by two sons: Douglas (Jodi) Samsal of Wellston, Michigan, and Greg (Mickey) Samsal of Dryden, Ontario; three grandchildren: Garrett Samsal, Jay (Marne) Samsal and Alea (Jim Carroll) Samsal; one great grandson: Brynn Kemper Samsal; and one sister: Jeanette Downing of Columbus Grove. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Gerald (Mary) Samsal and Lloyd (Geneva) Samsal; two sisters: Alice (Kenneth) Sommers and Dorothy (Med) Jones, (Lowell) Moore; and brother in-law: Fred Downing. Mr. Samsal attended Columbus Grove High School. He was a member of the St. John United Methodist Church, Columbus Grove. John was a life long farmer. His most favorite activities included farming, working his crops, talking to other farmers about farming and driving thru the country checking the area farms. He loved to hunt, fish and travel to Canada each year to the Lake of the Woods, where he had met his loving wife, May. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. Rev. Brett Kelly will officiate with burial to follow in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove, Ohio. Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m., on Monday, February 1, 2016, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to either the St. John United Methodist Church, 205 North High Street, Columbus Grove, Ohio 45830; or Putnam County Council on Aging.
