George Colby Obituary
Gomer George W. Colby, 96, of Manassas Park, Va., formerly of Gomer, died at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 15, 2011, at his residence. He was born Dec. 25, 1914, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Martin W. and Mary Cowden Colby, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 12, 1937, he married Kathryn Hazel Sprague, who died Nov. 3, 2003. Mr. Colby retired as head of the communications department at Buckeye Pipeline, Lima, after many long and loyal years. He was a member of Vaughnsville United Methodist Church, Vaughnsville. He was self-taught in electronics and was known around the Gomer and Vaughnsville communities as "Mr. Fix-It." He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Survivors include a son, G. Richard (Linda) Colby, of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Judith Kay (Ray) Stemen, of Lancaster, and Carol Marie Colby Chitty (George Jr.) Heavlin, of Manassas, Va.; and seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Colby; and a sister, Marie Matthews. Memorial service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Vaughnsville United Methodist Church, Vaughnsville. David Young will officiate. Burial is today in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, N.Y. Friends may call one hour prior to services Sunday at the church. Memorial contributions to:S.I.M.
