Vaughnsville Duane M. Young, 77, died at 6:50 p.m. Feb. 21, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born March 27, 1934, in Vaughnsville to John D. and Grace L. Stemen Young, who preceded him in death. On April 29, 1960, he married Kathryn Ann Mowery, who died Nov. 20, 1998. On Jan. 8, 2000, he married Ann Barnes, who survives. Mr. Young was an Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He farmed all of his life with his twin brother and they never had a serious argument. He was an active member of the Vaughnsville community. He had been a baseball and softball coach and a member of the Sugar Creek Athletic Association, Campus Life board, Vaughnsville Community Center board, Sunday school teacher and a volunteer for the Putnam County Fair. He loved to travel and always said that of all the places he had been he never wanted to live anywhere but right here. He was a 1952 graduate of Vaughnsville High School, where he played basketball, participated in choir and band, and was active in the Alumni Association. He received his pilot's license and loved all things related to flying. He was a member of the Whirl & Twirl Square Dancing Club, Orlando, Fla., and enjoyed attending the Daytona 500, for more than 20 years. He loved visiting friends and driving his Honda scooter around the countryside. He loved God and was a member of the Lima Baptist Temple and its Masterbuilders class. He had also attended and supported the Azalea Park Church, Orlando, Fla., and Vaughnsville Community Church. He loved his family and strongly supported them in all their endeavors. Survivors also include a son, Brian (Kendy) Young, of Bluffton; three daughters, Jennifer (Bob) Higgins, of Stuart, Fla., and Sheri (Bruce) Sybert and April (Pete) Halker, both of Vaughnsville; a stepson, Jeff (Becky) Jackson, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; a brother, David W. (Barbara) Young, of Vaughnsville; a sister, Doris Thompson, of Tempe, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Luke Young, Cara Young, Wyatt Sybert, Rylee Sybert, Jami (Jake) Slager, Alexa Halker, Hunter Halker, Zeke Halker, Nanette Davis, Robbie Higgins and Amanda Higgins; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Colton Sybert. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vaughnsville Community Church. Pastor Tom Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Pike Run Cemetery, Gomer, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9648 and American Legion Post 516. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Vaughnsville Community Center, Sugar Creek Athletic Association or the charity of the donor's choice.
