COLUMBUS GROVE Cletus J. “Clete” Schumacher Cletus J. “Clete” Schumacher, 81, died at 11:45 p.m., Jan. 29, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born Feb. 6, 1931, in Columbus Grove to Harry L. Sr. and Clara Kahle Schumacher, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 10, 1955, he married Kathryn “Kay” Mayberry, who survives. Mr. Schumacher was a 1949 graduate of Columbus Grove High School. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Air Police. He retired from Schumacher-Maag Co., and International Harvester/Case IH Tractor and Implement Dealer, Ottawa, after 47 years. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove, and the Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of American Legion Post 516, where he had served as commander, financial officer and on the color guard for several years. He had coached American Legion Pony League baseball and served on the the Putnam County Veteran Service Commission Board. He was a member of AMVETS and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2772, Columbus Grove. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors also include three sons, Gary (Cindy) Schumacher, of Columbus Grove, Richard “Rick” (Laura) Schumacher, of Kalida, and Mark (Debbie) Schumacher, of St. Joseph, Ill.; a daughter, Rose (Johnnie) Hawk, of Lima; a brother, Karl (Betty) Schumacher, of Columbus Grove; a sister, Pauline Osterhage, of Columbus Grove; two sisters-in-law, Norma Kerley, of Shelby, and Margaret Schumacher, of Columbus Grove; 13 grandchildren, Joy (James) Baumgartner, David (Amber) Schumacher, Nathan (Katie) Schumacher, Jessica Kahle, Amy Kahle, Kara Kahle, Grady Brown, Adam (Michelle) Schumacher, Brian Schumacher, Aaron Schumacher, Anthony (Laura) Schumacher, Kevin (Jamie) Schumacher and Megan Schumacher; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Alfred, Robert “Whitey”, Paul, Ray, Harry L. Jr. and Victor Schumacher. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove. Father Tom Extejt will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 516 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9648. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, where a K. of C. service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbus Grove Library or the charity of the donor’s choice.
