Thinking back about Butch I remember him as a very strong willed person. I am younger than Butch but growing up with two older brothers, Jim and Don, put me in his company and quite a few more of their classmates. Being younger, envious and easily impressible left me with many good memories of a group of people senior to me. I find myself sometimes reminiscing about those days and the people whose paths crossed mine, some still living and some deceased.Growing up, many of us spent our summers at the Columbus Grove Swimming Pool and if you can remember the diving boards, then you can also remember those whose diving skills were next to perfect and Butch was one of the leaders. Speaking about the pool, remember when, boy or girl, you would ride your bike up to High Street, stick out your thumb to passing cars, hitch hiking, with hope of catching a ride to the pool. The difference today is hitch hiking could be dangerous to your health, and if you left your bike along the road, would it be there when you got back? We did grow up in a pretty exciting time. Although I remember bringing Navy friends to Columbus Grove, on weekend liberty and was asked, “what did you do when you were growing up hereI also remember when the Columbus Grove School bought its first trampoline. Bob Diller was our Physical Education teacher and he had a good group of talent with skills that made the majority of us overly envious. Butch carried his diving skills over to this feat and performed twists, turns and flips with great precision. I never remember Butch dressing sloppily, in fact his attire was always impeccable. Butch always wore the latest styles and if Bob White’s Clothing Store employed a clothing model, Butch would have fit right in.When Butch entered the Air Force it started me thinking about taking a military path. Butch was very proud of the Air Force and once again he dressed perfect with everything shining and in place. Though sorrow may now impede our hearts, Butch, it was great to have known you.
